Love's Call book cover with layout by NicoleCadet on deviantART

Sword's Call Cover layout by NicoleCadet on deviantART

I've been working on these for some time. It's been fiddly, working with multiple formats and sizes, but done now :) Got other stuff under wraps so this is a fly-by sort of post

I’ve always been drawn to painting pieces that have elements of Celtic/ Arthurian mythology. Standing stones, beautiful women, haunting landscapes are some of my favourite subjects to paint. Below is the beginning of a personal piece which has ties back to some of my older pieces including Irish Eyes, Crow Woman’s daughter,  and my Standing Stone series.

I’m struggling a bit with the costume design. My head says go for historical accuracy, but the heart says ‘make it fantasy’. I’m trying to find a happy medium, but I suspect given that fabric was costly, particularly blue, that this is going to sit firmly in the fantasy bucket.

Because I'm feeling too lazy to repost :) I'll have a portrait of a female paladin/ cleric up in a few days too.

Happy New Years!

Hi all, hope everyone had a great New Years & holiday!

Mine was spent with family and was relatively quiet, just the way I like it. While there were some hiccups (flat tire, sunburn, mum spraining her ankle the day I was supposed to leave), overall it was nice to catch up with family and detach from the majority of my technology (ok, I lie… I used my phone on occasion and watched pay tv, but mostly I just swam in the pool, went walking with mum, and just relaxed).

On Christmas day, we went to visit my Aunt’s family who were staying at Green mount. We even saw dolphins swimming!

A Christmas tree in a park that hides possibly a mobile phone tower? It lights up at night.

One of my presents, a pack of gingerbread men *yum*

And an afternoon walk down near the beach.

And a quick sketch done during a lunch break at work. I haven’t figured the best way to do the weapon, hence it being rubbed out numerous times!

La La Life

Finally on holidays :) Life has been pretty same old same old. In the day job I finally got my scripts working and playing nice with scheduled tasks so +1 to batch scripts, +1 to powershell and +1 to permissions and scheduled tasks. This will mean nothing to regular people but it's geeky stuff that in some ways is really simple, but is also crap to troubleshoot and easy to cause much computer pain. I'm supposedly stepping back into coding next year for 50% of my time which should be interesting.

On to the arts. I've tentatively reopening commissions, though I'm going to hold off on traditional paintings for a while. I get hand tremors on occasion which means things take a lot more concentration and effort to paint, and there's also the worry that I'll screw up someone's painting.

New arts:

So this was a slightly more painterly piece of two male fantasy characters. Characters belong to V.Williams

Pencil sketch "Releasing stars" done for December's Sketchfest. I spent most of that weekend troubleshooting my stupid Wacom.tablet. I'm still not convinced it's really fixed as it still keeps dropping out. I've worked a bit more

Blog entry: Last week's sketchfest

So, have been pretty quiet on painting front. Actually, pretty quiet on most fronts. I've been doing some layout work which I should finish this weekend, and a small sketch to do from May (this was agreed upon and previously booked work so all good). I think I need to do my Angel painting in greyscale first, because painting him with colour is painful.

Have I shown the sketch? Probably not. Brain = Swiss cheese. I asked over on Facebook whether I should paint this digitally or in traditional media. I got one vote for each... so we will see. I might give up in disgust with the digital paintings as every flaw is immediately apparent when you try for digital realism. I really do need my own personal male model :P

Angel Sketch

I've been running around GW2 and turning into one of  'those' gamers, who does crazy achievements just to get a custom dragon skin for a scepter, or a miniature candy corn monster who can follow me around... don't think it does much, feels very much like Pokemon (gotta catch them all!) I've got a horrible feeling one of my next pieces will be my main character Rana (she's a ranger, I've decided she's rather anti-social. She runs around with her eagle Meh, and some kind of mountain lion called Hunka Munka (Yes, I grew up on Beatrix Potter, I wish they had a jackalope pet)

So, October Sketchfest:

Innocence Lost

1 hour speedpaint (and no it's not the girl from Labyrinth :P )

Dance of Death

actually about half an hour as I completely screwed up the original speedpainting, so the only way to recover it was to start from sketch.

Nyx – Goddess of the night

Nyx by Nicole Cadet

I started this painting many years ago, when I used Painter as my primary digital painting software. At the time I had a lot of other competing priorities, so she slipped into the WIP folder, home of the many unfinished paintings. With a few more years experience under my belt, and the desire to just finish a painting that was pretty, and for myself, I decided to redo this one.

I have always loved goddesses and myths related to celestial bodies. Nyx is a Greek primordial goddess linked to the night. She is the darkness, the mother of dreams and shadows, always at the edge of things.
