Earthsea movies?
I read the Earthsea Trilogy as a youngster(well 1, 2 & 3, I've never bothered reading beyond that). By 1990 when the 4th book was published I was probably reading something horrid like Point thrillers and Sweet Valley High :P In my normal fashion I forgot most of it. I remember enjoying 1 & 2, and feeling rather 'meh' at book 3. It was one of those series that pointed me towards fantasy/ sci-fi, but at the same time I never really 'connected' with the characters - probably because they were mostly male (and what with me being a girl, I tend to like books that have a female that's more than window dressing).
I watched Earthsea (I think sci-fi channel did it a few years ago, only recently came into my video shop) and thought to myself, I don't remember half of this stuff. Since when was Ged interested in girls? I thought he had a beard. Didn't the old dude die? Where's all the Arabic/ African things/ people I remember. Why is everyone 'white'? I thought the priestesses were 'badies', wasn't there a sacrifice? I was very confused because I didn't remember half of these events. But I watched it, quite enjoyed it, but seriously thought I was having a memory lapse.
I watched Tales from Earthsea today (Studio Ghibli). This time Ged had a beard :D But the rest of the characters (apart from Tenar and Arren) I couldn't remember. I was thinking that some of it felt familiar. It's Studio Ghibli - I loved it (though not as much as some of the other works - was a bit slow in places, and too much violence in others). Again, it wasn't really Ursula K Le Guin's book.
It's interesting how disparate film adaptations can be. I liked both. But at the same time, I can understand why fans of Le Guin's work would have been outraged / disappointed/ left scratching their heads. They had the names of her character, aspects of her world, very loosely related plots (read VERY loose) and not much else.
